I walked this path at first, too. For me, it was more like my stubborn battle with Microsoft than not wanting to learn Linux (I had already learned Debian some time ago).
I’ve flip flopped back and forth, but after the recent bs with screenshot and OS-side ads (for a PAID software, mind you) I haven’t even given Windows a second glance anymore.
If you’ve got the knowledge to truly debloat Windows, you have the knowledge to set up Linux.
You can also use alternatives like startpage and ecosia which use google results, I believe.
I have one of the old Ripley’s Believe It or Not books by mine. It’s wild how many things in there that amazed people back in the day aren’t really that amazing or unbelievable anymore. The internet has made the world a pretty jaded place.
Was going to say. I’ve been lucky. My only experience with Discord has been sudo pacman -S discord. I barely use it, but I have some friends I keep in touch with on it.

I miss my DVI to HDMI. Had to trade it off to a friend because his BenQ tinted everything lime green over HDMI. I gotta get another one to put in my big bag of cords I’ll never use but really like to have around.
My rule of thumb for technology is “don’t force it”. If it doesn’t come out with a light pull that’s when the flashlight comes out and I start inspecting. This rule doesn’t always work, though. Sometimes it takes the strength of 10 gorillas to put RAM in and I’m always scared to push harder.
Mechanical retention plugs are fading away, sadly. Long live the era of loose, wiggly plugs that may one day need to be held at a 20 degree angle to work.
That being said, I hate the retention clips on RJ45 and RJ11 jacks… I’ve had a few that wouldn’t release at all. Then I wind up struggling with my router for 4-5 minutes because its hooked up in my entertainment stand. If you accidentally snap those suckers in the process and plug them back in they will slowly slide out and you’re left wondering why your ethernet connection isn’t working a couple months later.
I’ve debated getting a spool of cat5 and a bag of RJ45. Much cheaper than replacing a whole cord every time and saves a lot of landfill. On the days my PC repair teacher was busy with a full IT backlog he’d sit us in a circle and had us put plugs on Cat5e, so the process isn’t unknown to me.
Don’t you go knockin my VGA. I still have about 10 in my attic. If nothing else, they’re great self-defense weapons. They could do some serious damage to a potential attacker and probably still work after.
I had a similar case. Was going crazy about the horizontal lines on my screen. They weren’t always there, just when a certain color took up most the screen or when a window was placed in a certain position. Suddenly bam, my whole screen looked like grip tape.
I started troubleshooting the display, compositor, checking the software for some sort of night mode or eye protection. Nuthin.
Then my friend says, “Are you using display port or HDMI? Try switching.” I switched to HDMI and god fucking dammit if it didn’t just work. Afaik it was something to do with the nvidia proptietary gpu drivers, because when I’d roll them back it didn’t happen.
Alternatively, you could use a TUI file manager. Once you get the navigation down you can manage things pretty quickly. Especially with ones that have options for dual directory layouts, like Midnight Commander or vifm.
Yazi, Superfile, Midnight Commander (my favorite), or Ranger. I’m sure there’s more, but those are the ones I know.

Check out Atuin. Its another must have for me. When you push up arrow, it shows your command history in a very pleasing list. You can even generate account keys to migrate your history between PCs, but I’ve never bothered with it. You can also search past commands on the history menu.
You don’t need an account for it. That’s only for the migration keys.
Just thinking of commands I need to learn, and I think chroot is up there. Iirc, you can recover from some extremely bad system states with an ISO and chroot.
I understand the basics of what it does from it’s description, I just haven’t really dived deep enough to feel comfortable with it.
Probably, but neither automatically opt into AI replies. Ecosia has an AI chat, but it doesn’t run until you go to it. Startpage has no AI option that I can see.
Ecosia has the upside of planting trees depending on user search rate. Not sure how true that is, though. I prefer startpage either way. Startpage claims to be privacy first, and I’ve never received tailored results or ads.
That doesn’t mean they don’t sell info. We can’t know that for sure, but it sure as hell beats using Google and it’s automatic AI searching.
