More so, they non-voted for it. They heard the quote:

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

And thought that it didn’t apply to them, or alternatively, they wanted to offer up LGBTQ+, Palestine, Ukraine, and PoC up as blood sacrifices in hopes of achieving the workers revolution that no evidence suggests would happen.

Because leftist people not only refused to vote to prevent a fascist from taking the executive branch, they also refused to engage in anything down ballot, completely rolling over for the far-Right.

    Again.

Like they have consistently done my whole life.

Of course the government doesn’t reflect anything left of center. Virtually none of us engage in elecroral politics, causing things to get continuously worse (but people are totally going to revolt any time now and usher in a new era of worker rule, despite a complete lack of extant evidence.)

  • Modifying software that might not be within the scope of the company that I work for, much less my team, on systems that I explicitly do not have authorization to make such changes on? No, I would not be doing that.

An important thing to remember is that going all-in on a given tool is going to result in a bad time. You suggestion of SQL, for example, excels in querying and modifying data that lives in a database and follows the expected structures in said database. Most data is not in databases, nor is it structured in a compatible manner, if at all. The workarounds needed to coax SQL into performing such tasks would result in syntax both more arcane and more verbose than the regex necessary to transform it into something compatible.

Use the right tool for the right job. For transforming semi-structured and unstructured data into something useful in a practical amount of time, regex is frequently the right tool.

  • I’ve had trans reports in the past when I was a supervisor (TBF, the world was a lot different). Two things that I’d recommend:

    • Continue being a good lead and treating them with respect, using their preferred pronouns, etc. Intervene gently but firmly if there is inappropriate derogatory stuff going on in the workplace.

    • If possible, I’d get a 1:1 meeting with them and outright ask “Do you want to talk with me about how current events are impacting you and anything that I can do to ensure that you feel supported?”. If they say “no” or aren’t comfortable, ensure that they know that that’s ok and that the offer is there.

As a disclaimer, I am neurospicy so, there may be gentler ways to approach but I have found that clearly and directly communicating that genuine support is there, if they need it want it and giving them a way to ask is generally well-received.
