  • They stayed home because either choice felt like doom, and probably felt they didn’t want to participate in either.

This is the false equivalency trap they were led into.

Neither side was supporting their cause, but one side was supporting Israel while trying to push for getting aid into the country, and the other side literally said Israel wasn’t killing Palestinians fast enough. You have to be a special kind of dumb to think those two things are the same.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. By not voting, they contributed to the win of the candidate who thinks Palestine shouldn’t exist.

Yes, I absolutely hold those people accountable, for this and every other action he takes. Sitting on the sidelines is immoral. Not participating because they couldn’t get exactly the outcome they wanted isn’t ethically defensible. The system is the way it is until we who are working to change it succeed (which may be never), and until then you pick the lesser of two evils, because not voting isn’t going to prevent the election.

Maybe they argue that by not voting they “sent a message.” Ok, maybe they did. As a consequence, the cost of their message is likely to be the extinction of Palestine.

Many of us tried to “send a message” in 2000, and it changed nothing; those of us who voted for a third party in protest are directly culpable for the war in Iraq and the continued expansion of the Republican agenda in courts and state legislature through two terms.

The protest voters, and protest non-voters, in 2024 participated in what’s to come.

The most infuriating thing about this is that it seems nobody learned anything from WWII. This is like Ghandi preaching passive resistance to German Jews; I have no respect for these people who refused to take a side knowing full well that one candidate was a worse outcome for Palestine.

  • If only.

For better or worse, my admins are conservative about site blocks. If I could get 1 siteblock wish, it’d be lemmy.sdf.org - I don’t know if the whole instance is rotten, but the fact that they’re letting that one person create all those fascist communities and repost unsubstantiated propaganda gives the whole site a black mark.

My second wish would be a block on Hexbear, but by now I’ve mostly personally blocked nearly all communities and users from there so that wouldn’t buy me much.

I have a Friendica account here, somewhere; I should check where I created it. Maybe reporting as a spam would work? This is the first abuse from there I’ve seen.

  • I think you have an X/Y problem.

Rootless podman requires no special firewall management. Like docker, you mearly expose you want in the container, and if you want those ports accessible outside the machine, the firewall has to allow access - just like any other program.

How is your podman configured? To use pasta, or slirp4netns? I often have trouble with pasta - I merely haven’t spent the time to figure out the details of using it - so I always just switch (back) to slirp4netns, which was the original network tool. Do this in /etc/containers/containers.conf, or dig into pasta and see if there’s something in there. The pasta package is actually called “passt.”

Did you set up subuid and subgid correctly?

Did you confirm you can access your services locally?

If you are using slirp4netns and have your account configured in subuid and subgid, then rootless podman should function as any other networking program, and you shouldn’t have any firewall issues.

As an aside, and just my humble opinion, I really hate firewalld. It makes firewall configurations complex and byzantine, and almost impossible to work with with other tools like nft. I’m sure it is great for some people, but anytime you add more complexity to a configuration, you add more opportunity for something to be incorrectly configured. I hate fighting with it, and have had times where I struggled to get it to open a port: I was in the wrong “zone”, or was in persistent mode rather than runtime mode, or whatever. It’s just unnecessary added complexity, and lately if the distro installs it I just uninstall it first thing and use nft.

If you followed the rootless podman wiki and everything else looks good, I’d look suspiciously at firewalld.

  • They aren’t scared of woman. They should be scared of women.

In most cases, an average guy could be taken by as few as 3 average women – that’s a scientific statistic, based on my scientific person science feeling about how many average women it’d take to make me feel physically threatened.

You can throw all sorts of variables in there: is the guy an MMA fighter? Are any of the women fighters? Does anyone have weapons, from rocks or sticks, up to guns? Is one of the women Holly Holmes or Ronda Roussey? What if it’s Dwayne Johnson against Ronda Roussey, Holly Holmes, and Anne Mathis? Heck, I’d pay to see that fight. Dwayne’s not an MMA fighter, but all that mass and muscle is going to count.

Anyway, a reasonable small group of untrained women could fuck up your average untrained guy, especially if the women aren’t holding back; so, yeah, if he isn’t scared of a group of angry women, he’s an idiot, rapist or not.
